Wine Myths That Refuse to Die (Part 3)

5 min readBy Linda

(Yes… there are still more.)

At this point, you might be wondering how many wine myths are actually out there.

The answer? Plenty.

Wine has a long history, a lot of tradition, and just enough complexity to let a few misconceptions sneak in and stick around for decades. So let's keep clearing things up, one glass at a time.

Myth #1: The Fancier the Label, the Better the Wine

We've all been there, standing in the wine aisle, subconsciously drawn to the bottle with the elegant script, gold accents, and a label that looks like it belongs in a museum.

Surely this one must be amazing… right?

Not necessarily.

Wine labels are marketing tools. Some are designed to look traditional and luxurious, while others are modern, playful, or even a little quirky. None of that guarantees what's inside the bottle.

In fact, some incredible wines have very simple (or even slightly odd) labels, while some beautifully designed bottles… don't quite live up to the promise.

The better strategy? Look beyond the label and focus on things like the grape variety, the region, or a producer you recognize or want to try.

Because at the end of the day: great design doesn't always mean great wine.

Myth #2: Legs = Quality

You know those streaks that run down the inside of your glass after you swirl? Those are called "legs."

They look impressive. They also get talked about… a lot.

But here's the reality: legs are mostly an indicator of alcohol content and viscosity, not quality.

A wine with more alcohol may have more pronounced legs, but that doesn't make it better—it just makes it different.

So feel free to admire them… just don't use them as your decision-making criteria.

Myth #3: You Should Only Order the Second-Cheapest Wine at a Restaurant

This one is surprisingly common advice.

The idea is that the cheapest wine is marked up the most, so you should "play it safe" and order the second-cheapest option.

In reality, restaurant pricing strategies vary widely, and this rule doesn't reliably lead to a better wine.

A better approach? Look for a grape or region you recognize, ask your server for a recommendation, or choose something you're genuinely curious about.

Ordering wine shouldn't feel like a strategy game.

Myth #4: Champagne Is Only for Special Occasions

Let's be honest—this myth is holding people back.

Sparkling wine (including Champagne) is incredibly versatile and very underappreciated. It pairs well with a wide range of foods and works just as well on a casual weeknight as it does at a celebration.

There doesn't need to be a milestone, holiday, or major life event to open a bottle.

Sometimes the occasion is simply: it's a Tuesday.

Final Thought

If there's one theme running through all these myths, it's this: wine has a way of collecting "rules" that make it feel more complicated than it needs to be.

The more you taste and explore, the more you realize that most of those rules are optional.

And if you'd like a relaxed, guided way to explore different wines, regions, and styles (without the myths getting in the way), that's exactly what we do at Travel Through Wine events.

Because wine should feel approachable, enjoyable, and maybe even a little fun.

Cheers 🍷
