(Let's clear a few things up.)
Wine has been around for thousands of years, which means it has collected a few myths along the way. Some of them are harmless, some are confusing, and a few make wine seem far more complicated than it really is.
Let's bust a few of the most stubborn ones.
Myth #1: Expensive Wine Is Always Better
Price and quality are related—but only to a point.
There is often a noticeable difference between a $7 bottle and a $20 bottle. At that level, better vineyard sourcing and more careful winemaking usually start to show up.
But the jump from $20 to $50? For most casual wine drinkers, the difference isn't nearly as dramatic as the price tag suggests.
Great wine doesn't have to mean expensive wine. Many fantastic bottles live happily in that $15–$25 range.
Myth #2: Red Wine With Meat, White Wine With Fish
This rule gets repeated so often it sounds like a law of physics.
In reality, pairing wine is much more about weight and flavor than strict color rules. A light red can be great with fish, and a rich white can pair beautifully with certain meats.
The best pairing rule? If you enjoy it together, it works.
Myth #3: Screw Caps Mean Cheap Wine
Once upon a time, maybe. Today? Not at all.
Many excellent wines use screw caps because they help prevent cork taint and keep the wine fresh. Some of the most respected wineries in the world have embraced them.
So if a bottle twists open instead of popping—don't worry. The wine inside can still be outstanding.
Myth #4: You Have to Know a Lot About Wine to Enjoy It
This one might be the biggest myth of all.
Wine is meant to be enjoyed, not studied like an exam. You don't need to identify twelve tasting notes or memorize European wine regions to appreciate what's in your glass.
In fact, the best way to learn about wine is simply to taste it.
That's exactly what we do at Travel Through Wine tasting events—explore different wines side-by-side, learn what makes them unique, and discover new favorites along the way.
No pressure. No wine snobbery. Just good wine and good conversation.
Because at the end of the day, the only rule that really matters is this:
The best wine is the one you enjoy drinking.
Cheers 🍷
